Varsity Game Summaries
Tuesday,
May 15th v. Massabesic
The Westbrook Blue continued their hot hitting with a
10-0 shellacking of the outmanned Mustangs. Christian
Hamilton pitched a masterful game, keeping the Mustang
hitters off balance with his highly effective, hard breaking
curve and his powerful fastball. He allowed only one hit
over 5 innings and picked up his 3rd win of the year.
Josh Harriman pitched a flawless 6th inning picking up
his first save of the year. Offensively, the Blazes were
led by Senior, Shane "Crooked Hat" Kelly, who
had three (3) hits, including a 1st inning single that
produced 2 runs. Adam Hamilton also had a 3 hit game,
including a two-run triple. The Blazes have won 4 out
of their last 5 games and are gaining more and more confidence
each time they take the field. They visit Scarborough
this Thursday in an evening game that begins at 7 p.m.
Saturday,
May 12th v. Bonny Eagle
The Blue Blazes rebounded from their loss to Deering with
a tremendous offensive show against the outmanned Scots.
In the 18-7 win, Westbrook was led by Sophomore Matt Foye
who went 3 for 3. Adam Hamilton had another strong outing
with a 7 inning complete game win. He also helped his
own cause with a bases loaded triple that blew the game
open in the 3rd inning. The Blazes' record now stands
at 6 wins and 4 losses.
Wed.
May 9th v. Deering
The setting was a well manicured Hadlock Field and the
evening temperatures were quite pleasant, the results
of the game........not so great. The final score was 10-0;
however, the score is somewhat misleading. Heading into
the bottom of the 4th, the Blazes were down 1-0 and pitcher
Shawn McAlpine was doing an admirable job keeping the
Deering bats at bay. However, some uncharacteristic defensive
lapses in the 4th put the Blazes in a hole they could
not escape from. The Blazes may well get another shot
at Deering in the post-season and, if so, the Westbrook
faithful are confident they will prevail.
Tues.May 8th v. Cheverus
Cheverus, with a 6-1 record, entered the game first in
the recent Heal Point standings. A superb pitching performance
by Christian Hamilton propelled the Blazes to a clutch
extra inning win over the Stags. Christian earned the
win with 9 innings orf strong pitching...he seemed to
get better as the game wore on. The never say die Blazes,
who were down to their last out in the bottom of the 7th,
were saved by Mike Tanguay who came up big with a run
scoring single that made it 4-4. In the bottom of the
9th inning Joe Cook led off with an infield single and
moved to second on Christian Hamilton's walk. Travis Rand
then laid down on a well placed bunt single scoring Cook
for the winning run. Hustle and heads up base running
by Cook allowed him to score all the way from 2nd base
Sat.
May 5th v. So. Portland
The Blue Blazes put on an offensive show in a 12-2 blowout
win over the Red Riots. The game was shortened to 5 innings
due to the 10 run mercy rule. The star of the game was
Mike Tanguay, who hit a majestic Grand Slam to left center......it
was a beautiful sight. Shawn McAlpine pitched 5 strong
innings to up his record to 3-0. The Blazes' record now
stands at 4-3.
Thurs.
5/3 v. Marshwood
After
falling behind 10-3 after 2 1/2 innings, the Blazes mounted
a strong comeback before ultimately falling to Marshwood
12-8. The highlights of the game were Steven Lebel's towering
2 run homer over the 350' marker in left center in the
3rd inning and Adam Hamilton's valiant relief effort,
which allowed Westbrook to get back in the game. Adam
pitched the final 5 2/3 innings only allowing 2 runs.
He also contributed offensively with an RBI double.
Tues.
5/1 v. Thornton
The
Blue Blazes were limited to three (3) singles by Thornton
pitcher, Matt Leach and lost 4-0. Christian Hamilton pitched
6 strong innings for Westbrook and Eric Anderson pitched
a scoreless inning in relief. Westbrook started off the
game with consecutive singles by Christian Hamilton and
Travis Rand, but were unable to get a run across. The
final hit came from Sean McAlpine in the 2nd inning. The
Blazes continue their homestand with Thursday's game against
Marshwood.
