To the Westbrook Baseball Boosters/Parents:

After months of internal debate I have regretfully decided to resign my position as the Varsity Baseball Coach at Westbrook H.S.  My step son Domenic is now a Freshman at PHS and there is no way that I can see him play and give 100 percent to the players at Westbrook.  I have tried to figure out a way to do both but it is not possible.  I know first hand how important it is for parents to be there to watch their children play.  My mom and dad never missed a game.  I tried to convince myself that I could somehow fix the schedule to get to see some of his games, but in the end it is just not possible.  My daughter Kate is also a good softball player and last year she started on the varsity team and I got to see her play just a few times.

My four years at Westbrook could not have been any better!  The administration was outstanding, the best I have coached under.  I was blessed with great asst. coaches!  And the parents/boosters were always supportive!  I am disappointed that I could not help the program win a State Championship, a title the town of Westbrook deserves!  Three out of four years we came up a game short, but I would not trade one memory that I have. The kids were great to coach and I enjoyed every second I was at Westbrook!

I do believe the program is in great shape and will continue to compete every year.  We did graduate some great players but the well is not dry.  As evidence of the Jr. Legion success last summer and with players like Moody, Quinlan, Devilisnki, and Stuable coming back I can see Westbrook right back at St. Joes next spring playing for another Western Maine Championship!

Our summer legion program is finally starting to shape up as one of the area's best.  The Sr. Legion team was one game away from the states this year and that is with their two best pitchers out with arm injuries.  And the Jr. Legion team made history as being the first one from the State of Maine to win the Regional Championship!  I am proud of where I am leaving the program and I am confident that Todd Sampson will hire a head coach that knows the program and will continue to keep Westbrook Baseball as one of the top programs in the State!

Please let your kids know that my decision was not an easy one.  I am going to miss coaching them, but will be rooting for them in every game except when they play my son's team.  Please tell them that I will call or write any college coach if they need a reference.  Again, thanks for all the support these past four years!

Sincerely,

Mike Rutherford
